My client, a trailblazing New York attorney in her 90s, wanted to write a memoir about the people and events that shaped her life and career. Working with my client and her family, I developed a bespoke structure for the story she wanted to tell, created prompts to guide her recollections, and followed-up with detailed questions that brought to life the people and moments she described. The result was a collection of character-driven essays exploring different aspects of my client’s life, from education and work to family and friendship.
“My mother was caught in the cross-current of generational change. She came of age between the generations of women who worked at home, in millinery shops in their kitchens, and the career women of my years. She was an early working mother. She was an independent woman.”
“Charlie was a fireman and I adored him. He was fun and a little bit flamboyant, and he did the things my father wouldn’t do. He drove a ferry boat that put out fires on New York City rivers by shooting water into burning boats. And he drove the chief’s car—very fast.”
